Atlas Coffee Program - Friedhats Coffee - Bomu La Matunda Natural

At Monogram, we are passionate about exceptional coffee experiences that inspire wonder. Over the years, through our global travels and competitions, we have discovered not only some of the best coffee producers in the world, but also some of the best roasters as well. At our Britannia location, we are bringing together our favourite roasters from around the world and their best selections alongside our own Monogram roasts. We are excited for people to discover new roasters, new coffees and new taste experiences. With this program we will carefully-select global roasters take an in-house "residency" in Britannia, with us working closely with each roaster to bringing the best and most diverse selection of beans. Let's explore the wonderful world of coffee together.

“A garage, two guys, and a roaster” is how the pair, Lex Wenneker and Dylan Sedgwick describe their coffee set up. Departing from the typical roasting style in the Netherlands, Lex and Dylan wanted to roast coffee they way that they liked it, rather than focus on roasting how other people liked it. At the time, coffees were being roasted dark, focusing on heavy and full bodied coffees leaving a gap in the market for a roaster that focused on custom roasts - developing roast profiles to accentuate their natural characteristics.

Friedhats philosophy is simple - to only sell coffee that tastes great, consistently with honesty and transparency, and have fun while they are doing it. In addition to their desire to focus on great tasting, great quality coffee, something that sets Friedhats apart from other roasters, is their packaging. Instead of using bags that end up in the garbage, they wanted to use packaging that could be refilled, reused, or recycled afterwards. Their unique, identifiable pill bottle packaging, paired with their bright and bold branding, grabs your attention, and sets the precedent for what you expect when you drink their coffee.

Lex is the 2015, 2016, and 2018 Dutch barista champion, 2016 World Barista Championship finalist, and most recently placed 2nd in the 2018 World Barista Championship in Amsterdam. Together Lex, and Dylan have carved out a name for themselves in the industry and strive to roast and serve delicious coffee that they hope others will enjoy just as much as they do.

Bomu La Matunda Natural

At an altitude of 1400-1600 masl, the Pearless Estate like many other estates and smallholders had mostly been focusing on washed lots, but now are venturing into the experimental and natural processes too. This farm was founded in the 1940s, and many of the trees still harvested today were in use during this time - possibly even the varieties we see in this fruity bomu, SL-28 and SL-34.

With Kenya traditionally being known for its fully washed exports, this ferment forward lot is one of the more exciting and unconventional coffees you’ll be able to try this year.
