Rachel + Daniel Peterson

The name Esmeralda is legendary for a reason. The Peterson family was the first to grow the gesha variety outside of Ethiopia, and instead of keeping it to themselves, they shared it with the world- changing coffee forever. This lot from their El Velo farm is a perfect example of why gesha is so special. Bursting with tropical fruit, juicy peach, and delicate rose notes, it’s vibrant, complex, and downright delicious. Two decades later, Esmeralda is still setting the bar for quality, and we’re here for it.

El Velo might be the newest farm in the Petersons’ lineup, but the land has been producing standout coffees for years. Sitting high in the mountains of Boquete, the combination of volcanic soil, crisp air, and balanced sunlight creates the perfect growing conditions. Now that the coffee trees are fully matured, they’re hitting their stride- showcasing even more of that signature gesha magic. With expert natural processing, this coffee is layered, expressive, and full of life.

Beyond great coffee, Esmeralda is all about doing things the right way. They recycle and treat all their water, use hydroelectric power, and avoid herbicides and pesticides. Huge parts of their land are set aside for conservation, and they invest in their team with fair wages, education, and healthcare. It’s a farm built on passion, generosity, and a relentless drive to make coffee better- and we’re so excited to share it with you.
