Kotowa Chakira

Ricardo Koyner is the kind of producer who’s always asking “what if?” A third-generation farmer from one of the pioneering coffee families in Panama, Ricardo farms across Boquete and Volcán, constantly experimenting with new ideas, varieties, and techniques. We’ve been working with him for five years now, and every visit reminds us why those conversations keep pulling us back.

At Finca Duncan, that curiosity shows up most clearly in Ricardo’s nursery, where varieties from all over the world are grown, observed, and tested. Chakira is the result of years of patient, high-risk work. An unidentified Ethiopian variety named by Ricardo himself, it was planted across different parts of the farm and compared against other cultivars, all without any guarantee it would pay off.

This harvest proved it was worth the wait. Chakira looks a bit like Laurina on the branch, but the cup leans distinctly Ethiopian, with vibrant fruit and an impressively long finish. With Ricardo’s daughter Victoria stepping in as the fourth generation, fresh from a Master’s in food science, this coffee feels like a milestone moment for the Koyner family and a natural fit for our Fancy Rarities lineup.
