Kotowa Maragogipe

Maragogipe is one of those varieties that likes to keep you guessing. Depending on how it’s grown and processed, it can swing from savoury and subtle to bright and tropical. When we first cupped this lot in Panama, though, there was no confusion. It was all elegance. Gentle florals, lifted fruit, and a calm confidence that stopped us in our tracks. Easily one of the most beautiful expressions of Maragogipe we’ve tasted.

This coffee comes from Ricardo Koyner, a third-generation producer whose family helped pioneer coffee growing in the region. Ricardo farms across Boquete and Volcán, including his home base at Finca Duncan, where curiosity and experimentation are baked into daily life. He’s constantly exploring new varieties, processes, and farming techniques, always with an eye toward what coffee could become.

Spend an afternoon with Ricardo and you’re guaranteed to learn something new. A walk through his nursery feels like a preview of the future, with countless varieties waiting their turn in Panama’s rich volcanic soil. That future is already taking shape with his daughter Victoria, now stepping into the family operation as a fourth-generation producer after completing a Master’s in food science and technology. We’ve been lucky to work with Ricardo for the past five years, and this Maragogipe feels like a perfect snapshot of why we keep coming back.
