This is our first year sharing coffee from Hacienda El Obraje, and we couldn’t be more excited. Located in the mountains of Nariño, Colombia, El Obraje is the result of Pablo Guerrero’s bold vision. Originally a wheat farm, Pablo transitioned to coffee production 25 years ago, despite uncertainty about whether it would thrive at such high altitudes. Today, his farm is not only producing incredible coffee, but it even took first place in the Colombian Cup of Excellence in 2021.
This lot is a washed Maracaturra, a hybrid of the Maragogipe and Caturra varieties that combines large, flavourful beans with hearty resilience. After cherries are picked, they ferment for 20 days in the same bags used for harvesting before being pulped and undergoing a 48-hour dry fermentation in stainless steel tanks. This careful process enhances clarity and balance, bringing out pineapple, stone fruit, and floral notes with a juicy, mouthwatering finish.
Pablo’s approach to farming balances innovation with sustainability. Coffee grows alongside a natural forest reserve, benefiting from volcanic soil, a unique microclimate, and extreme temperature shifts between day and night. These conditions slow tree growth and produce dense, complex beans. We're so happy to be working with El Obraje and can't wait for you to taste this coffee!
